Exercise behaviour The way that children participate or not in activity or exercise is sometimes known as ‘exercise behaviour’. There are many possible reasons why children would start participating in a particular activity and then why they either continue with (adhere to) that activity or just drop out of it. Children might have more than one reason to take up and maintain a particular activity and it is common for these reasons to change over a period of time. 9 lists just some of the common reasons why children might want to join in an activity and keep coming back to take part in it.

For instance, the stroke volume (SV) and cardiac output (CO) are lower in children than in adults at any given level of activity. In other words, children cannot pump the same amount of blood around the body in the same time period as adults, because they have smaller heart chambers and lower blood volume than adults. Definition ‘Stroke volume’ is the volume of blood pumped out of the heart in one contraction. ‘Cardiac output’ is the total volume of blood pumped out of the heart in one minute. Heart rate also tends to be higher in children than in adults.
