Coaches who bait, scream, and holler are not enhancing their relations with officials (or their team’s chances). In addition, they are setting a bad example for their players, who will often follow their cue. On the other hand, the coach who treats officials with respect will almost always maintain a good relationship with them. One of the best opportunities to get a point across to the officials is in the pregame chat. This is a chance for a head coach and members of the staff to generate good will between themselves and the officials—and perhaps get a message to them.

I don’t even like the word punishment. Yet some coaches punish more than they praise. I strongly suggest that you never discipline to punish; rather, discipline to teach. This will allow you to complement your use of rewards with a disciplinary system that leaves no doubt regarding what is unacceptable in terms of effort, conduct, and court decorum. And it won’t cause your players to be so frightened of the consequences after a miscue that they become hesitant or refuse to even try. I’ve often said that it is not so much what you coach but what you emphasize that really counts.

I learned a lesson from Chris and became more convinced than ever that the open-door policy is the best one for players and coaches.
