The history of travel to and around the Arabian Peninsula is a long one, and is intrinsically related to shipping routes through the Red Sea, Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea. 2). By such means it was possible to travel from India to Arabia using the monsoon winds, and connect by land routes to the Mediterranean and thus to Europe. The Middle East is one of the few areas of the world where passenger shipping is still an expanding market, with services in the Arabian Gulf showing particular levels of growth.

The War also increased destination awareness and levels of knowledge about global geography (p. 103), which added to travel motivations at the end of hostilities. Today’s nostalgia travellers utilize the re-vamped Orient Express or patronize those cruise ships such as Cunard’s Queen Mary II, launched in 2004, which still maintain the traditions of formal clothing for dinner and a Captain’s Table.
